When the Milwaukee Art Museum had as its first exhibition the glass work of Chihuly, I recognized that I sought to create what Chihuly
accomplished in glass and on canvas. Using pigment and water, I paint these colorful images, which bring such joy to me both
as I paint and in their completion.
My desire is to express on paper what I experience as the glorious transcendence we
find the world around us. I strive to share with you my experiences of the world alive in its wondrous glory. I
hope to create watercolors reflecting the beauty within the viewer, within you.
“When we expect and engage the Beautiful, a new fluency
is set free within us and between us. The heart becomes rekindled and our lives brighten with the unexpected courage. It is courage that restores hope to the heart... Beauty is not just a call to growth; it is a transforming presence wherein we unfold
towards growth almost before we realize it. Our deepest self-knowledge unfolds as we are embraced by Beauty.” -John
O’Donohue
Trained as a theologian, I have always been interested in how the divine is manifested in our world. When I was young, I fell
in love with impressionism and abstract expressionism, including the work of artists Klee, Kandinsky, Matisse, and O’Keefe. I began painting in 1996 in Miami, where the colors are bright and the mystical everglades, exotic flowers, and powerful ocean inspired
me daily.
